Hardin County History - Ridgeway

Ridgeway was laid out in lots by R. D. Miller, the county surveyor on May 20, 1851 for Samuel McCollough. On December 7, 1858, the village was incorporated under the name of West Ridgeway. The name of the town was eventually changed to just Ridgeway in honor of an Englishman who had purchased thousands of acres in and around the town. Gorham Bunker built the first frame house and Robert Stephenson built the first hotel. W. P. Hews opened the first general store and Dr. D.C. Wooly was the first physician. In 1878, there was a dispute between Logan and Hardin Counties as to where exactly Ridgeway was located. No definite decision came out of the dispute other than Ridgeway was and is still considered as a town of Hardin County.
