FEBRUARY 2000

CROESO!

WE ARE 10 YEARS OLD!!! Let's Celebrate!!!!!

See the program Bulletin of the celebration click here!

The Welsh Society of Northwest Ohio was organized on January 21, 1990 at the Putnam County Library in Ottawa, Ohio. Robert Jones and Marguerite Calvin who have both since retired from the library, were instrumental in getting the group to organize. Officers elected were: Alice Bushong, President; Richard Taylor, Vice President; Margey Alger, Secretary and Charlotte Ballard, Treasurer. A constitution was drawn up and and it was agreed upon by the 37 members that the group would meet four times a year. We organized to help foster appreciation of and to preserve our Welsh heritage and traditions and to promote the literature, poetry, music, and arts of Wales for the benefit and education of the people of Northwest Ohio.

There are presently 100 members and to date we have presented 10 scholarships to students of Welsh heritage totaling $5,000.00. Our goal is to open a Welsh Museum to preserve our heritage.

Having come this far we feel a celebration is definitely in order. On Sunday, February 27, 2000 we will be gathering at Henry's Restaurant, 810 N. Locust Street, Ottawa, Ohio, to honor both St. David, our patron Saint and our organization. Henry's is handicapped accessible. A map is provided in this mailing. Beginning at 3:00 PM a Trustee from the Welsh Women's Clubs of America will speak followed by musical entertainment. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the meeting. An election of officers will also be held. Please contact a current officer if you are interested in assuming a position.

At 5:00 P.M. a buffet with three meat entrees will be served at a cost of $10.50 per person including tax and gratuity. Reservations are required and should be made by February 22, 2000. A form is included in this mailing. Reservations should be mailed to: Treasurer Verona Sandy at 7225 Gomer Road, Gomer, Ohio 45809.

We are hoping that all members will attend along with many new interested people. Spread the word! Remember: You do not have to be Welsh to be a member,

If You're WELSH,
This is a grand opportunity to Stand and Be Counted!!!
This opportunity will occur on April 1, 2000, the date of the next official U.S. Census.

The U.S. Census asks questions in regard to ethnic background. Often these questions end up not answered in detail. When a specific ethnic background - Welsh, in our case - is not indicated in that question, the odds are that the census data will count us as "Other."

The National Welsh-American Foundation has launched a campaign called "Census - 2000, Count Us In America." The goal is the recording of every person on Welsh descent in this census. The resulting numbers will be satisfying to those of us who know that there are many more of us than past census figures suggest, but also will show a clearer picture of how many of us there really are.

Do your part, celebrate your Welsh heritage by identifying yourself as such in the 2000 U.S. Census. Help ensure all the Welsh are counted. Keep your heritage alive!
