K-9 Unit
The Lima Police Department Canine Unit has four teams. Each consists of the handler and his K-9 partner. Each team attended a training program at Von Der Haud Gill K-9 Academy in Wapakoneta, Ohio and receive additional training throughout the year. Each K-9 is trained in patrol work, suspect tracking, and narcotic detection.
The teams have had several felony arrests and sizeable illegal narcotic seizures. Along with the narcotics, they have also recovered the cash used in the sales of the illegal narcotics. The officers and their canine partners have tracked many fleeing suspects and they have recovered several pieces of important evidence.
The K-9 teams assist local and surrounding law enforcement agenies when they are requested. They are also available for public demostrations.
