Since the early ‘80’s, Jimi Goare has been known for his unique style, feel and command of the electric guitar. He has mentored over 1,000 Aspiring players in his 27 years of playing and instruction. Here is his story...
In 1976, an eager young teenager convinced his dad to buy a $40 acoustic guitar. Dad agreed, under the condition that his son would take guitar lessons. Dad was an educator by trade, therefore, he knew the importance of instruction. Within the first couple of months of lessons, the instructor impressed upon mom and dad that their young student possessed an ear for music and a feel unlike he had ever seen. After the first year, Jimi began teaching students of his own. He formed his own band and started playing clubs and parties at the age of 15. As he became known as “the little kid that could rock”, older, more established bands began to make offers to join them. After much consideration, Jimi’s father agreed to allow the youngster to play the club circuit. At age 16, he was working for Showtime, a top-flight booking agency. This was the first time this agency booked a band with a minor as a member. At age 17, he was asked to audition for Showtime’s top act and regional favorite, the Toledo band Shyster. He was half the other members ages! As a member of this band, he got offers from every band in the “A” club circuit to join them. He stuck with Shyster, and in 1983 they signed with a small label, Focus Records, from Cleveland, Ohio. In late 1983, they entered the studio with well known hit-making producer, Carl Maduri III. Carl had several hits to his credit, including records from Dianna Ross, Michael Stanley, Donnie Iris and the Gap Band. This association proved to be fruitful for the band and the production company. While in the studio, the Michael Stanley Band offered Goare the gig on guitar, as their guitarist was leaving the band. Although greatly tempted, Goare stayed the course with his band. This proved to be a good decision, as the Michael Stanley Band ceased within a year, and Shyster went on to have a midwest hit with the song ‘Bernadeane’, written by Goare. Over the next two years, the band toured with several national bands, including Cheap Trick, Night Ranger, Eddie Money and B.T.O. To this day, Shyster has sold more units in the tri-state area than any other regional band! In 1986, after much consideration, Goare and drummer Gorsuch decided to leave the band, sighting a difference in lifestyles. In 1988, Goare married and moved to Nashville to begin a new music career. This move was short-lived due to a family illness and the couple returned to Ohio. However, while in Nashville, Jimi worked with Heartland, a country gospel band, along with Guy Penrod of Gaither band fame, Warren Haynes of Allman Brothers fame, and Roy Yeager of Atlanta Rhythm Section fame. In the late ‘80’s, while auditioning for CBS, Brent Rowan (#2 studio call in Nashville) offered work to Goare via his studio connection. Jimi was unable to oblige due to family obligations. In 1993, WTLW- TV 44, offered him an audio mix position of which he accepted and still works. In 1996, fellow musicians and friends recruited Goare into The Affair band. The Affair released the CD “Solid Ground” in 1998. Warner Chapel Records of Sweden expressed much interest in the CD and bought a large quantity. Overseas reviews of the record were great and produced much critical acclaim.
In 2000, Goare joined the Fox 25 team and still works there. With all the experience in media, Sound Scape Media was an obvious choice for commercial production. Jimi Goare also is the audio mix engineer for Lima Comm. Church and instructs guitar, bass and vocal students at Goodwin Music in Elida, Ohio. Look for two up and coming students, Aja and Jasmine Goare ! (Jimi’s daughters)
